Those who are experts in the field of antique clocks will perhaps refer to a specific type of clock by different name if it is in a different area and people may sometimes be bamboozled by this. For instance in the UK something that would be familiar to people as a ‘bracket clock’ might be known as a ‘mantle clock’ by an antique dealer in the United States.

For those of you learning about clocks, there are several basic categories for antique clocks, in which are contained subcategories. For example, there is a basic category of clocks called “Beehives,” which contains the subcategories of Gothic and Ripple beehives. Similarly, the basic “Drop Trunk” category contains the subcategories of “Schoolhouse,” “Act of Parliament,” and other types of Drop Trunk clocks.

Advertising clocks is the collective term for clocks used for promotional purposes that display advertising somewhere on the clock dial or case. The clock might also be used as part of the advertising, as when a clock is incorporated into a larger sign. Most commonly found as wall clocks or shelf clocks; more rarely as Long-case or ‘Grandfather’ clocks. These are great antique wall clocks.

Human beings are fascinated by time, and the passage of time. It is that deep interest that has led to seemingly mundane inventions such as the alarm clock. People’s need to measure time and use time have led to technological advances over 6 millenia.

The very first early mechanical clocks, which didn’t have pendulums, were developed in the last half of the thirteenth century, probably by monks from central Europe, and were placed within the church. They did not have dials or hands and only struck bells on the hour.

Clocks were originally placed in the church belfry to utilize the church bell. These iron clocks were created by local blacksmiths and were very heavy and large. It took more than a century before a clock as we know it was invented, one with hands and dials. By early in the fifteen century, small clocks for home use became available which were likely fashioned by gunsmiths or locksmiths. These early antique clocks are very valuable.

Throughout the civilized world, Coca-Cola advertising is incredibly well known and instantly identified. The company has for a very long time recognized that collectibles are a fine way to advertise among fans and those not yet devoted to their brand of soda. Items can be found to appeal to nearly any individual of any age and taste.

The Coca-Cola Santa, which was introduced in 1931, has popularized the classic Santa look, what we associate Santa as looking like. The Christmas Santa has been featured on mugs and clothing, and people collect Coca-Cola clocks, signs, pins, sweatshirts and millions of other things for their practicality or just for the logo.

Coca-Cola clocks were originally made to place in stores selling the sodas and many have a “Sold Here” text to directly advertise the brand. These were large and were often given to merchants as an incentive to display them. They range from simple clocks with logo and decorations to elaborate neon clocks. Alarm clocks are very popular for home use, but the neon clocks are seen as art and decor as well as merely practical timekeepers.

In addition to the vintage and older Coca-Cola clocks, in more modern times all sorts of watches and clocks have been made and continue to be very popular items. They make perfect gifts for Coke aficionados of course, but many who don’t have collections still have a fondness for the brand and enjoy even a single item. Clocks, after all, are imminently practical.

These Coca-Cola clocks have even been replicated as pins that are appealing to collectors of pins as well as collectors of clocks and advertising memorabilia. They make excellent gifts for collectors and can even be used to decorate the wrapping of a larger gift as a hint as to what is inside.

Modern Coca-Cola clocks may be sophisticated electronic chronometers or replicas of vintage clocks. Age alone is not what makes these clocks desirable or valuable, since some from only a few years ago may bring many times as much at sale or auction than real vintage ones. There is also a thriving business in making vintage replicas. Replicas can be fairly costly, but most of them are a more affordable way to own or give these items.

Soda-Pop-Collectibles.com features vintage Coca-Cola clocks as well as many from Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7UP, Hires Root Beer, and other soft drink makers. View our huge selection of vintage Coca-Cola advertising with new collectibles added every day.

Tammy, one of our visitors, is seeking information on this clock which was given to her.  It seems to be an “Eclipse Regulator Clock”. It is a wall mount pendulum clock with key. Appears to be oak finish.

Tammy writes: “It actually resembles one you have listed on your website titled ‘Antique New Haven Calendar Wall Clock‘. Only mine says Eclipse. I can’t seem to find any information on it.  I have attached a few photos of the clock.  Any info you or others may be able to come up with would be much appreciated. Thanks!”
