Collectibles - How to Avoid Being Conned By Dishonest Dealers
The proverbial story of going into the attic and discovering rare and valuable collectibles is quite true. Almost everybody has something inherited or long forgotten that is actually quite unusual. While they will probably not pay for retirement, such collectibles can make a nice meal or evening out.
That vintage armchair which once graced your aunt's home or that knickknack you turned up at a local rummage sale could just be one of those collectibles that now bring in a pretty penny for their owners. Any of us could discover we possess such items among all the stuff in our basements or attics.
Maybe you have a set of long-forgotten dolls, a teakettle, or maybe an antique table that you got from a neighbor. You should also examine any old bottles that you might have in your bathroom.
Although tough to accept, such common items as these are becoming the most popular collectibles. Cleaning out your attic is a good plan for finding collectibles. Rather than throwing out unused things that is usually where we put them and who knows what you will find there.
People are interested in a wide range of antique collectibles. Some people may be interested in cigar cases while others are interested in wall clocks or other items. Regardless of these individual interests, there are items in your attic that will be of interest to someone.
Do you believe you may have an item that could be of interest to someone who would pay some serious money for it? You know, someone like a collector who would know the difference between useless junk and a real antique? Would you know the difference? There are some simple rules that can help you recognize a real collectible from a something of no value.
Primarily, try to avoid antique fairs that advertise an abundance of similar items. There's a chance the featured items are modern duplicates. Don't waste your time looking at very soiled items as the seller might be attempting to portray it as an antique piece. Every reputable dealer will usually clean his wares in hopes of selling them. Coca-cola items and Pepsi vending machines continue to be desirable to those who collect.
